Can a diabetic foot ulcer heal without surgery?

Yes. Many diabetic foot ulcers can heal without major surgery when pressure is adequately relieved, circulation is sufficient, infection is properly managed, and appropriate wound care is provided.(( American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee. “12. Retinopathy, Neuropathy, and Foot Care: Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026.” Diabetes Care. 2026;49(Supplement 1). ADA Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026, Section 12 )) More complicated ulcers may require procedures or surgery.

Should you walk on a diabetic foot ulcer?

Walking can place repeated pressure on some foot ulcers and interfere with healing. Depending on the ulcer's location and severity, a clinician may recommend an offloading device, cast, brace, specialized footwear, or another method of reducing pressure.(( International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF). “Guidelines on Offloading Foot Ulcers in Persons With Diabetes.” 2023. IWGDF Guidelines ))

Should diabetic foot ulcers be covered?

Diabetic foot ulcers generally require an appropriate wound dressing rather than simply being left uncovered. The type of dressing should be selected according to the wound's characteristics, including drainage and the condition of the surrounding tissue.(( American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee. “12. Retinopathy, Neuropathy, and Foot Care: Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026.” Diabetes Care. 2026;49(Supplement 1). ADA Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026, Section 12 ))

Can you treat a diabetic foot ulcer at home?

Some wound care, such as changing dressings, may be performed at home as part of a clinician-directed treatment plan. However, a diabetic foot ulcer should first be professionally evaluated. Debridement should not be attempted at home, and infection, poor circulation, or deeper tissue involvement may require additional medical treatment.(( MedlinePlus. “Diabetes – Foot Ulcers.” U.S. National Library of Medicine.
