Does blue light raise blood sugar?

Controlled research suggests that blue-enriched light can temporarily alter glucose and insulin responses, particularly during evening exposure.(( Cheung IN, et al. “Morning and Evening Blue-Enriched Light Exposure Alters Metabolic Function in Normal Weight Adults.” PLOS ONE. 2016. Morning and Evening Blue-Enriched Light Exposure Alters Metabolic Function ))

Does blue light cause insulin resistance?

Blue-enriched light has increased measures of insulin resistance in a small laboratory study, but this does not prove that everyday blue-light exposure causes chronic insulin resistance.(( Cheung IN, et al. “Morning and Evening Blue-Enriched Light Exposure Alters Metabolic Function in Normal Weight Adults.” PLOS ONE. 2016. Morning and Evening Blue-Enriched Light Exposure Alters Metabolic Function ))

Do blue-light-blocking glasses lower blood sugar?

There is currently not enough evidence to show that blue-light-blocking glasses lower blood sugar or improve insulin sensitivity.

Are phone night modes good for diabetes?

Night modes reduce some blue wavelengths, but they have not been shown to improve diabetes control. A small Night Shift study did not find meaningful improvements in the measured sleep, hunger, or leptin outcomes.(( Driller MW, Jacobson G, Uiga L. “Hunger hormone and sleep responses to the built-in blue-light filter on an electronic device: a pilot study.” Sleep Science. 2019. Hunger Hormone and Sleep Responses to a Built-In Blue-Light Filter ))

Should people with diabetes sleep in a dark room?

A dark sleeping environment supports normal sleep and circadian signaling. Greater nighttime light exposure has also been associated with a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes.(( Windred DP, et al. “Personal light exposure patterns and incidence of type 2 diabetes: analysis of 13 million hours of light sensor data and 670,000 person-years of prospective observation.” The Lancet Regional Health – Europe. 2024. Personal Light Exposure Patterns and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes )) Research in adults with type 1 diabetes has separately associated greater blue-light exposure during sleep with less time in range.(( Hong SJ, et al. “Blue Light Exposure During Sleep in Type 1 Diabetes: Impacts on Glycemic Control and Psychosocial Health.” Journal of Sleep Research. 2026. Blue Light Exposure During Sleep in Type 1 Diabetes ))
