One of the major challenges for a diabetic is maintaining their Diabetes and Stress levels. I’ve been through many stressful periods during my diabetes life. I’ve also noticed when stressed out my sugar levels go up and are very difficult to maintain at normal levels.
They say “STRESS KILLS” especially in people who have heart attacks, well it’s the same thing in diabetics. At times of stress, hormones like epinephrine and cortisol kick in and raise your blood sugar to help boost your body’s energy levels. Both types of stress cause this, emotional and physical. Since diabetics lack the ability to regulate glucose levels with self made insulin, sugar rises until stress is relieved. Type 1 diabetics are more susceptible to this than a person with type 2.
Try to avoid stress at all costs if you can, I do and it has made a big difference in my life. Remember, stress and diabetes definitely DON’T mix!
