Higher Fats Keto Diabetic Diet

Imagine if what we have been taught to be healthy food choices are not the best choice to achieve a healthy brain, body function and longevity free from chronic disease? Imagine if foods we believe to prevent disease actually cause disease? This higher fats keto diabetic diet (aka ketogenic diet) actually helps people with diabetes as well as non diabetics. Diabetes knowledge is King!

A documentary called The Magic Pill proposes such a scenario. It questions whether a diet predominantly built around carbohydrates can wreak havoc on the body in many ways. Weight gain, brain fog, chronic disease and chronic inflammation to name a few. This documentary is controversial because it goes against what we have been taught about nutrition since the late 1950’s. It challenges the FDA recommendation that 60% of the daily food intake should be carbohydrates like pasta, bread and rice. Instead The Magic Pill suggests a higher fat and protein intake and that the  majority of carbohydrates should come from fruits and vegetables.

As you all know my boyfriend is diabetic with a pump and is very diligent about trying to control his sugars. After eating healthy higher fats like avocados for 2 weeks, moderate protein and carbs mainly from fruits and vegetables he has lowered his insulin consumption by 10-20 units per day. He also drinks bulletproof aka healthy coffee daily instead of adding sugar.

I am not a dietician and therefore not qualified to recommend specific foods. I do not believe in a one size fits all approach to eating. Each person is individual and needs a trial and error period to figure out what works best for them. I do believe, just because a large company tells you a certain food is healthy does not automatically mean it’s good for you. These are business’ and business’ need to make money. Point is we need to learn to think for ourselves and make decisions based on critical thinking. I believe food can be medicine and therefore better food choices over a lifetime can help to dictate how you look, feel, perform and age. I have experienced this personally and with my clients.
